With us needing to leave for our crossing to South Island by 7.15 am we said our Au Revoirs to our superb hosts Fiona & Deryk and The Whyte House … but knowing we’d see them again in 4 weeks😎
This sailing can be challenging at times, but conditions were as good as they can get – blue skies, flat calm sea and 20C !
We were particularly looking forward to experiencing the sail out of Wellington then negotiating our way into Queen Charlotte Sound via some narrow channels…

Needless to say it didn’t disappoint and after checking in our cases “airport style” we departed on the Kaitaki at 8.45 am.

To say the crossing was spectacular is a vast understatement as no sooner had we entered the Cook Strait with Wellington behind us the outer islands, of which there are many, hove into view..

The approach into Picton Harbour is magnificent as our Captain skillfully navigated through narrow channels with steep sided islands on either side; hopefully, the following images convey the scale of this grandeur🤞

Having collected our hire car we had a 30 mins drive to Blenheim in the Marlborough wine growing area.
Had a late lunch after a wee tootle around the town, then took a wee snooze poolside before dining at the hotel😊

Thank you South Island, methinks we’ll get along just fine…😉😎🇳🇿

So glad you had that rarest of things…a smooth crossing out of Wellington

What, no storms and mad dashes out of the way of ships a few order of magnitude bigger than you? Ferries, so boring. But Julie does look very happy to be on one again. Enjoy the Sth Island.
