Sunday 31 December 23 – Hogmanay!

Today we awoke to some persistent rain, but with the promise it would progressively improve as the day panned out🀞

Before we ventured out it was time to say Au Revoir to Lucy, who was off to meet up with some pals at a music festival πŸŽΆπŸ˜‰

HNY in advance LucyπŸ˜‰πŸ΄σ §σ ’σ ³σ £σ ΄σ Ώ

Wellington is famous for it’s Cable Car, so we left as the sun started to break through…and, naturally enough, were not disappointed by the experience!

Fiona & Deryk have proven to be, amongst other things, excellent tour guides as local knowledge came to the fore again..

A wee stick insect stopped by to say hello…as you can see, he’d started early and was already leglessπŸΊπŸ˜‰

Having arrived at the top station we had 4 options…we chose to descend through the Botanical Gardens, which proved to be a great choice given the breathtaking splendour they presented us with😊

Next, we had a wee walking tour giving C&M a chance to see the Parliament building “The Beehive”..

This was the original Parliament building and is the largest wooden building in NZπŸ˜ŠπŸ‡³πŸ‡Ώ

Our guides then drove us round a peninsula to one of their favourite beaches, appropriately named Scorching Bay πŸ˜‰

Facing this way to avoid the sandstorm as the wind picked up!

Shortly after arriving back at The Whyte House, we were introduced to our hosts’ long term friends, Jackie and Chris, who were joining us for our NYE meal downtown.

They were excellent company too as we boarded a bus for a 30 minute trip to our chosen “cool” bar and restaurant..

..and what a fab Asian restaurant it was too..

Emerging into the night sky we made our way through to the lagoon, where a live orchestra and singers provided the entertainment in this fabulous environment…

Well done Wellington 😊

Concerned we might not be able to get a taxi after the fireworks at midnight our locals recommended we should get one c.11 pm the watch the countdown on TV…. totally sensible suggestion….until we realised that, after flicking through all the channels, none of the NY celebrations, of which there were a few, were being broadcast by any of ’em!

Undeterred, we did our own countdown, wished each other HNY, then sung Auld Lang Syne🎢🍺🏴󠁧󠁒󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

At about 1.30 am we all turned in knowing we needed to up at 6.30 am to catch our ferry across the Cook Strait to South Island!

Who needs sleep anyway when you’re having such a great time…πŸ˜‰
